Not the only option here. Good.
More people are stuck in this loop than any one product will ever reach, and some of the alternatives are excellent. Here is the map as we would draw it for a friend, including where somewhere else is the better call.
Every claim about another product comes from its own website, store listing, terms or privacy policy, as published on 29 August 2026, linked below. Spot something out of date and we will fix it.
Side by side.
| Maybe | Choiceful | NOCD | ocd.app | ChatGPT | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | AI coach for the intrusive-thought loop, built on ERP | AI chat for OCD episodes, ERP and ACT | Live video therapy with licensed OCD specialists | Daily CBT exercise modules | General AI assistant |
| Will it reassure you? | No, and it says why each time | No - their design goal too | A therapist manages this in session | Not a chat, so it can't | Yes, endlessly - that's the trap |
| Who can read what you write | Nobody. Sealed on your device; we never hold the key | Their systems - conversations build a clinical profile (their privacy policy) | Your therapist - that is the product working | Exercise answers are processed by the service | The provider, under its data settings |
| Advertising and analytics partners | None. Nothing to feed them | Meta, Google and Reddit listed as advertising processors (their privacy policy) | Healthcare privacy rules apply | States it never shares personal information with third parties | Not ad-funded; retention varies by plan |
| Clinical backing | Built on published guidance (NICE, APA), every claim cited - /evidence walks it; no independent review yet, and our terms say so | Marketing says built by OCD specialists; their terms say not clinically reviewed or backed | Licensed clinicians; large peer-reviewed outcome study | Founded by a professor of psychology; cites 10 randomised controlled trials | None for this |
| Where it lives | Web app: installs to your home screen, opens on any device with a browser, no store account | iOS and Android app from the stores | Mobile app plus video sessions | Mobile app | Everywhere |
| Price, before you commit | On the pricing page and at checkout: card up front, charge date named | Not published on their site; free to start | Insurance-led; free consultation call first | Free tier, then subscription after a 7-day trial | Free tier; paid plans published |
| Can it hold you to a limit? | Yes - you set ceilings, loosening waits 24 hours | Not offered | Your therapist sets the pace | Sessions are short by design | No |
Where something else wins.
If you can get to a specialist, go. A trained ERP therapist is the gold standard, and NOCD has put real clinicians a video call away with insurance coverage across the US. Nothing on this page, ourselves included, replaces that. This app exists for the hours a therapist cannot be in, and for everyone still on a waitlist, priced out, or not ready to say any of this to a person yet.
If structured daily exercises suit you better than a conversation, ocd.app has a research pedigree we plainly respect: a founding professor, published trials, years of iteration. It is a different shape of help - modules rather than a voice in the moment - and for some people that shape is the right one.
And Choiceful gets the core thing right: an AI that refuses to hand out reassurance, available at 3am. We disagree about what should happen to your words after you type them, and the table above says exactly where. But on the central design call, they and we are on the same side against the answer machine.
The difference we would stake the product on.
This loop runs on your most private material - the thought you have never said to anyone. An app that personalises around your symptoms has to read your words to do it: profile them, store them, run analytics over them. That is not a scandal, it is how software normally works. We built the abnormal version.
Everything you write here is encrypted on your device before it is sent, with a key we never hold. No symptom profile exists on our side, because nothing readable exists to build one from. There is one honest exception - generating a reply means the model briefly sees your message, retained by no one - and we document it rather than round it away. The full list of what we can and cannot see is at /privacy, short enough to actually read.
“Encrypted” appears on every product’s page in this market. The question that separates them is who holds the key. Ask it of anything you are considering, including us.
Seven days to see which shape fits you.
